Who's coming to City Chapel anyway?

As a church planter, I get this a lot: “Who is your target demographic?”  I didn't like this question at first because it felt like naming a specific group of people was antithetical to the gospel.  The gospel is for everyone, and everyone is welcome at City Chapel.  But, as I was reading Galatians, I noticed this:  Paul writes, “on the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised” Galatians 2:7. Paul was called to be a minister to a specific group of people--gentiles (uncircumcised).  And, Peter was called to be a minister to the--Jews (circumcised).  So, because I now understand where this question comes from (and see the wisdom in it), let me answer broadly.

Our vision for City Chapel is “to create a church that downtown residents want to attend.”  And these people tend to be young, business professionals who are not a part of any Christian worshipping community. Some are college students, many are artists. And several of these people are either sick of hypocritical Christians or have too many questions to continue to participate. We hope to create a communal space for people with questions to fully engage church among others with doubts; we believe in a faith community that makes space for hard conversations; with conviction and civility, we hope to show the city of Grand Rapids the authentic Christ we read about in the scriptures and how God calls his church to live in this world.  This reality is for all, but specifically aimed to reconcile the hearts and minds of Grand Rapids residents back to God.

I had a conversation with a friend recently wondering if they were still included in City Chapel - because they don’t live downtown. I immediately responded “of course.”  AND, we want to primarily minister to those that live downtown Grand Rapids.  We are a church of the gospel for the city of Grand Rapids, and our main focus is ministering to those who live downtown.
